Ok well if you are already a Softimage user then most likely you already know of most of these resources. But with the Softimage Exporter being released and the Collada support going in to a public beta phase. I would like to share with you guys a list of training resources for what is in my opinion the best 3D application for character animation and games asset creation on the market today.
Autodesk Softimage, Formerly Softimage XSI and its non-commercial sibling Mod Tool have a many tools designed specifically for game development.
If you would like to read more about the unique game related features in both Softimage and Mod Tool Read This.
Other interesting customer stories on game development can be found here.
You can get Softimage Mod Tool here.
And now the reason you are reading this in the first place.
First off a nice little once through for all of the basic features. 'The Artist Guide to XSI' by Digital Tutors is the training DVD that comes with the full release of Softimage 7.x. This one contains almost 7 hours of video instruction including a section on XSI for games. They have it on their website for free download. 'EXE compressed download'

Last but not least the Softimage Exporter by the guys at Dark Industries

I have used many tools over the years including 3Dsmax , Lightwave, Blender, Power Animator, Houdini, and even Maya for over 10 years. 'I was an early beta tester.' None of them compare to the toolset available to games and character pipelines that can be found in Softimage. I made the switch a little over 6 months ago and I honestly wish that I had done so LONG ago. With Matt's new exporter and the Collada support I do not think that there is a better tool for a Torque 3D art pipeline available today.

Lol - James, you got some Autodesk shares or something?
- (Formerly the XSI Mod Tool) A completely free version of the Autodesk Softimage modelling package. Plugins for Source, CryEngine 2, Unreal Engine 3, XNA, Unity, and more are available. Softimage Mod Tool 7.5 exports to the Microsoft XNA development platform and add-ons are available that enable export to CryENGINE 2, the Source engine.
- Download Softimage Mod Tool 7.5 Here ^click^ Mod Tool is the free version of XSI with some limitations, but is basically the same as full commercial versions otherwise. Softimage XSI is the preferred 3d package for creating assets for SWBF1 or 2. To export msh files from Mod Tool 7.5 use the ZETools plugin developed by ANDEWEGET. ZETools currently supports scenes with geometry, UVs, bones.
yes i have to agree that xsi is the best 3D application out there on the market today as i have tried many 3D programs over many years my self nothing beats xsi.
i know its not called xsi anymore but i am going to call it still as its a better name for it i think.
. Details please.
(sorry but I can't be bothered to watch hours of videos when it is easier to ask you :P )
I mean it seems to have a lower learning curve.is this the appeal ?
Edit: Does anyone want to give details other than 'I think it is cool cuz it is the best' ? I mean,..wth!? hehe :P
the texture editor i think its the best out of the hole deal. theres also ice which is a partical editor which is the best in its class thats if you own full version though. basically its the best as its easiest to use and it comes with everything you ever need no longer do you have to buy this and that just to make a game its all in once package now.
i don't know what more you would want to know theres allot more i not even saying here thats with this 3D program you just have to try it out your self or watch videos to see how easy it is to work with. they can still make the program even better i knwo one thing they could add or change that i would like so theres still room to add things to it. just download the mod tool and try it for 1 week or even less then that as you don't need much time to learn this program if you watch all the videos they help you learn allot faster. the documentation is the best as well.
why on earth do you think Autodesk would want to buy this program as its better then all the other programs they already took over.
Quote:why on earth do you think Autodesk would want to buy this program
. so they can drive every speck of potential competition out of the market to the point one day we can hit them with an anti-trust suit.. but thats just me.
So why do I think that Softimage is the Best application suited toward Video Game Art pipelines?
Well other that features like Ultimapper, GATOR, and MOTOR, there is alos a type of animation layer capability that the only other way you are going to get it is MotionBuilder. Well I guess that is listed as a feature of Maya now but Softimage has has the Animation Mixer for a long time. Not sure but it may go back further than Kaydara releasing FilmBox.'later became MotionBuilder'
Modeling in Softimage IMHO has a far superior workflow. With the way that tools are grouped and have multiple functions depending on keys held and mouse buttons used.
Now that UNFOLD3D has been integrated , It has filled in the one area that I felt that Softimage was weak.
Another Area is stability over the many years that I used Maya I found that even on 100% certified Hardware the application was still fer flaky and prone to crashes. I have seen this in 3D max to a lesser extent. Could be because I have spent less time on it though. I have heard many other people complain that it does the same thing that Maya does. 'crash a lot'
And no I don't own Autodesk stock. I have been running away from them for years But they keep buying out every software I go and start using so what am I to do. Actually I hope that someday Blender will get to the level that Softimage is at now. If it does I will use it.
Yes I know there's the Mod Tool (which I have) but to my knowledge its for noncommercial only whether people follow that or not. And like you. I'm becoming less and less a fan of Autodesk.

I have read numerous threads where you pick this fight with people whenever anyone says they like and app and it isn't 3Ds max. For someone so busy you sure take the time to engage in petty arguments for no reason.
I'm not sure asking you for specifics is the same thing as picking a fight. I only recall one other thread (I could have missed more honestly) where what you accuse him of took place, and frankly the original blog poster was more at fault than anyone else whether by design or by accident. Letting someone get under your skin to the point you start addressing potential personal traits is. well, serves no purpose.
I enjoy your posts. especially this one. Thanks for the great links to information.
~LK~
But from a workflow stand point I would say that Softimage is one of the best 3d applications available. (if not the best) This page pretty much sums up about everything I have to say about the Softimage workflow : Softimage Non-destructive Workflow
In a small team or being the only artist working on a project, tools like Ultimapper, GATOR, and MOTOR give you a huge advantage over the traditional workflow of most 3d tools.
- In no way do I 'pick fights' and there are not numerous threads in which your perception of the situation occurs. I ask questions to people about relevant topics and their reactions/perceptions make the questions appear disingenuous. My words should be read at verbatim.. but it appears some people like to inject thoughts into them.
** I ask genuine questions about genuine topics. **
I don't know if this is wrong of me but I do not expect to read blogs about something being 'so cool' because it 'is cool' and it 'wows the user'. I prefer details and I am sure any one else would want the same. And since you had stated that you have used so many tools over *ten years, I thought I could get a great answer from you. .I am simply at a loss here James. I am sorry that you had to make part of this personal.
I am not a kid James. Please do not try and treat me as one.
P.S. did I ever mention 3dsMax here ? :shrugs:
GATOR is simply brilliant. The ability to overlay cloths/meshes and extend the rigging to a *new* mesh is delicious.
Anyways, If I had a spare $3k sitting around, I might jump on board.
Good luck with your exporter Matt.
my apologies.

Well, as for Mod Tool I would say that 90% of GG members fall into the 'non-commercial' category. Also I would think that probably just like Houdini as long as you have bought license by the time you are publishing things you are prolly ok. Unlike Houdini however Softimage come from a long history of character animation. the original Softimage 3D one of the first 3D suites to have bones and skinning. Softimage's main focus has always character creation and animation. Houdini on the other hand comes from a history of being used for dynamics and special effects for Film. Not saying that Softimage doesn't have these abilities. Just saying that the applications come from 2 different disciplines.
Long before Maya there used to be a saying that was create in Alias and animate in Softimage. Of course niether of those packages exist anymore what is left of Alias is now Studio Tools and well Softimage 3D was retired by Softimage XSI.
Alot of people do not realize that alot of the character animation that people often credit Maya with is done in Softimage. ILM ran their entire Character animation group off of Softimage 3D 4.0 Through the end of Attack of the clones. 'although Avid liked to spin it as they used XSI'. Yes alot of other packages are used to construction of assets, and quite frankly as soon as the animation is done the stuff is usually taken right back out of Softimage'at least in the film industry' MotionBuilder seriously cut into Softimage's share of the work. and that along with many years of neglect under Avid had lowered Softimage's market share.
Anyway what makes Softimage great is it ability to help a character artist create and animate characters easily and efficiently. Simply put you can Do more in less time and in my opinion more easily.
sorry bout the history lesson
like i said i have used many programs and i think my work as been faster and easier to make and even though i am doing it faster and easier my work to me seems 200% better at lest. i used to hate my work and it was a pain as it took so dang long now i can build it faster and better and i like my work now it looks amazing. though i have not textured any of my final game assets but they look better then any of my past 3D objects.
this only apply to me but it might apply to others as well. i never took schooling for xsi and i don't thin you need it the videos are just fine i did take a class that worked with 3Dsmax and one with lightwave and yet without any schooling and just self teaching i am better at XSI in no time at all.
i knwo it kind of sounds like i am advertising XSI but i have never liked a 3D program better then XSI. I really think people that hate there own work should try XSI even if you still hate your work after using XSI just say to your self did you like it better then any other work you have done be for. if not then go back to your other program but try it for 2 weeks at lest though i think you only need 1 week but 2 weeks should do you good i think. :P if your work is already pro then you might want to stay at your program though goign to XSI might make your pro work alot faster so you still might want to try it. :P
basically what used to take me days now takes me hours and at better quality.
I remember back in Sept. we didn't renew our Maya maintenance contracts and went with Softimage right before XSI7 came out. the gave us beta access till release and everything. We were up to almost full speed on the new software in a couple weeks and have never looked back. Things got done so much faster, and just not having Maya constantly crashing was enough to put me in a better mood. Not to mention that I was able actually get home in time to see my family.
Quote:Commercial Version of ModTool 7.5 Pro for Microsoft Xbox Live Community Games Available
Autodesk Softimage Mod Tool Pro 7.5 software is functionally identical to the Mod Tool, but has an End User License Agreement that allows users to produce assets for games sold via Microsoft’s Xbox Live Community Games. Autodesk Softimage Mod Tool Pro 7.5 is available only with Microsoft’s XNA Creator’s Club Premium membership.
I hate having to impot via Blender just sounds like a dumb pipeline.
Xsi Mod Tool 7.5 Download Full
I have that importer installed in both Softimage 7.5 and ModTool 7.5 and other than some occasional bugs it works ok on most files.
Xsi Mod Tool 7.5 Downloads
If you track down a copy of the Softimage 7.0 demo and install it the plugin is located in the XSI plugins directory and is named '3dsImport.dll'.I've been looking around and there is an old plugin on source forge looks like it was written for max 7 or 8 3ds files.
Autodesk also has a fbx coverter app which converts OBJ, DXF, and 3DS files to and from the FBX format. You can then use the Crosswalk plugins to import the fbx into Softimage/ModTool. Crosswalk is also used to import and export COLLADA files to and from Softimage/ModTool.
